There was a run riot at the Rajkot, and things are not expected to change for the better – for the bowlers at least – at Nagpur. Chosen as the venue for the second ODI at the last moment after Vizag was ruled out, the new stadium at Nagpur has so far hosted one Test, one ODI and one T20 match, and all of them have seen sizeable scores.
With batting likely to rule the roost, the captain winning the toss will face a tricky decision because of the dew factor. The late evening dew is going to make it hard for thebowlers to grip the ball, thus bowling first might favour the bowlers, but with the pitch likely to be another batting beauty, the side batting first is likely to put up a big score, thus putting pressure on the side chasing. With both sides having a good batting line-up though, the temptation will be to put the opposition in, and back the batsmen to chase any total – after all as Sri Lanka showed, almost any total is in fact chasable on a good day.
For India, one of their major worries looks to have been assuaged, with Virender Sehwag expected to play after being off the field for a large part ofSri Lanka’s chase in the first ODI. However, India ’s other major headache has not yet been resolved, with Yuvraj’s fitness still having a question mark over it. The status of his finger injury is unclear, and he has now contracted a viral flu. It is to be hoped that it is just a normal viral flu and not the H1N1 that Sreesanth had contracted.
The rest of the batting looks in good shape, but ideally Dhoni should resist tinkering with the batting order too much. Gautam Gambhir is best suited in the top-3, and that is where he should stay, while Dhoni himself can come in at Number 4 if Yuvraj doesn’t play. Raina, Kohli, and Jadeja form an effective lower order in Indian conditions.
The bowling cannot be judged by the pasting that it took in the previous match, since all the bowlers were universally punished, but they can learn from some of the mistakes made and not give runs for free when they are on easy offer anyway. Particularly in the first spells, thebowlers need to bowl with pin-point precision since the power-play overs can prove very damaging if Sri Lanka make full use of them. The fielding is in a laughable state right now, but the only ones doing the laughing are the opposition teams.India have never been the most athletic of sides, but it seems they’ve now forgotten how to catch balls too, and the largesse in the field will hurt them hard in close matches. There were some bright spots in the bowling in the previous ODI, with HarbhajanSingh being outstanding, and Zaheer and Nehra doing exceptionally well in the closing overs, which just showed that the quality is there in the attack and it just needs to be implemented more consistently.
Sri Lanka would have been understandably down-hearted after coming so close to clinching an impossible run-chase and failing, but their batting would have given them the belief that no total is beyond them – and conversely put the fear into the Indians that no total is safe. Sangakkara has been in scintillating form since the third Test in Mumbai, and has not fallen for less than 50 in any of his outings to the crease since his century in that Test match – he scored 137 in the second innings at Mumbai, 78 and 59 in the two T20 matches that followed, and a breath-taking 90 in the first ODI. Dilshan has not been too far behind, failing to get going only in the second T20 match. Both of these batsmen will have to guide the rest again ifSri Lanka want to achieve a match-winning total. Mahela Jayawardene never fails to look classy at the crease, but has recently been a little short of runs after starting the Test matches in style. The biggest question confronting the Lankans though is the use of Sanath Jayasuriya. For some reason, the team management thinks he will be best suited in the middle order, but in the brief time he spent at the crease in the first ODI, he looked like a fish out of water at Number 4. While Upul Tharanga did well for Sri Lanka, the question they have to resolve is whether it is worth taking a proven performer such as Jayasuriya out of his most comfortable spot.
The bowling presents a lot more worries for Sri Lanka than the batting, and they have already lost Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando to injuries. The good news is that Malinga is expected to be fit, andSri Lanka will hope for that magic ball from him to get rid of Sehwag, who has been a thorn in their flesh right through the tour. However, with Murali gone, Sangakkara will have to turn to someone else for some much needed control in the middle overs, and while nobody can step into Murali’s giant boots, someone will have to step up and make a decent fist of it at least.
It is critical for Sri Lanak to win this match, since being 2-0 down in a 5-match series makes it almost impossible for any side to make a come-back.
