The fans of superstar Rajinikanth are a bit disappointed that he will not be celebrating his birthday this year. Rajini has made it clear that the "killing of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka and the Mumbai massacre" has left him numbed and in no mood to have a birthday bash. Rajinikanth, at the best of times makes his birthday a very personal affair and for the last few years had always been out of Chennai on his birthday! This year too, he has left the city on Wednesday evening (December 10) for Hyderabad where he will be shooting for daughter Soundarya's Sultan – The Warrior at Ramoji Rao studio. He had nothing to cheer about in 2008, as Kuselan in which he did a cameo role took a beating at the box-office. But the superstar has always bounced back from every setback, and remains the undisputed Baasha at the box-office. An attempt to put together a dispassionate perspective of a man like Rajnikanth, the biggest star in Tamil cinema is a difficult job. The villain turned hero who later became a cult figure has been around for nearly 30 years and has delivered more number of hits then anybody else. He has that incredible combination of being larger-than-life and yet seeming to be just an ordinary man on the streets. It has nothing to do with his superstar stature or being the number one at the box-office. Rajni has passed the true test of a superstar when people who knows nothing about Tamil cinema still recognizes him as an icon! At the box-office, Rajnikanth is a role model for all wannabe stars in Tamil and other languages. At his age when most of the others would have faded out or doing films that suit their age, Rajni is still capable of bringing in the youth audience (17-25 years) some of them were not even born when he attained superstardom! Rajni's reach is phenomenal cutting across regions, language, cast and creed something the other heroes can only dream of! His biggest strength has been the lady audience and 40-plus generation for whom he is a comfort factor. Remember, this group is cynical to the new breed of young heroes and rising superstars who they feel cannot hold a candle to the Thalaivar. In an age when youth is preferred to experience and 50-plus are treated as "over the hill", Rajnikanth shows that "old is not always cold, still gold at the box-office!
