BCS Bowl Games - In a Word: Disappointing

After the games ended yesterday and before the matchups were released, I was hoping for the following (knowing that Texas vs. Alabama was a shoe-in):

  1. That TCU would get to play Florida.
  2. That Boise State would get to play Cincinnati

I wanted those matchups because I'm sure people still think that Florida is a great team and they only lost to the best team in the country and would beat anyone else. I see a TCU team that would be able to match up physically on defense against Florida and it would be fun to watch a so called "mid major" chase Tebow around all day and knock the rest of that team into the dirt. Essentially, I view TCU as a team that has not only the best chance to beat Florida, but to shame them. I wanted to see Boise State play Cincy because the two teams could possibly provide enough electricity to power an entire third world country for a year and would play in what would have been the most exciting bowl game of the year.

Instead, we're getting what we're getting and the powers that be in college football have figured out a way to screw up what should not be screw-up-able.

So here are the matchups (all rankings BCS)

Citi National Championship Game
January 7, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. PT
Pasadena, California

No. 2 Texas (13-0) vs. No. 1 Alabama (13-0)

Hooray. Have you ever seen an elephant eat a longhorn before? Well, we're going to witness that crime against nature on January 7. This will not be an exciting game. This will be a beating. There are enough cooking shows on TV now that we've all seen a professional chef expertly dice up onions. He's precise and lightning fast. Alabama is the chef in this analogy and Texas is the onion, except instead of using a knife, Alabama is going to use a mallet. I just see them bashing Texas into oblivion. Whatever the under is, bet that, and whatever the spread is, bet on Alabama. Trust me. They're going to kill Texas.

Allstate Sugar Bowl
January 1, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. PT
New Orleans, Louisiana

No. 3 Cincinnati (12-0) vs. No. 5 Florida (12-1)

As we saw in the final BCS rankings, Cincy came in third with a BCS % of .888 (Alabama .998; Texas .943; Cincy .888; TCU 884; Florida .864; Boise State .811), which narrowly edged them over TCU, so if Texas would have lost, Cincy would have played Alabama in the title game, but just barely (by 2 one hundredths). And freakin' Florida is still ranked higher than Boise State. As much as I love college football I hate it as well. It's corrupt and ridiculous. It looks like the Harris Poll and the Coaches Poll liked TCU better, but the computers put Cincy and Florida over TCU. What? I like Cincy's chances to score on Florida because they have the athletes that can get up and down the field, plus they're playing in a dome and they've got enough speed to do some damage. Also do not underestimate how massively disappointed that Florida is because they are not playing in the big show. I give Cincy a great chance in this game, even if they give up points like they've bet the over.

Rose Bowl Presented by Citi
January 1, 2010 at 5 p.m. ET
Pasadena, California

No. 7 Oregon (10-2) vs. No. 8 Ohio State (10-2)

The Rose Bowl is the Notre Dame of the bowl system. The arrogance that they have as the "Granddaddy" is such that they always get their "traditional" matchup of Pac 10 vs. Big 10. I mean, why do they get such special treatment? Also, notice how their bowl is named. It's the only one of the BCS Bowls that has the name of the bowl before its sponsor. Because they wouldn't deign to have a sponsor (e.g. it's not the Citi Rose Bowl… it's the Rose Bowl Presented by Citi)… as if they're above taking a sponsor's money. It's annoying, it's pompous, and it's antiqued. In short, it's college football!

As Tyrelle Pryor watches his defense go against Oregon's offense I guarantee you this thought will pass through is head: "I should have gone to Oregon." That offense is perfect for a guy of Pryor's considerable physical talents. As perfect as Masoli is for Oregon (and he is perfect) Pryor would have excelled there as well. As it is, he's stuck in a 1962 offense that: (1) does not allow him to grow as an NFL prospect and (2) does not allow him to be as good as he can be as a college QB without regard to the NFL (e.g. run the spread, do what Masoli is doing…). So, great. We're essentially seeing one of the great talents in college football wasted. Perfect. But hey, at least Tressel is still beating Michigan! (oh and winning 10 games per year I guess...)

Because Oregon runs its offense so well and has played a higher caliber of opponents all year long (note: both played USC, with OSU losing on a last second drive at home and Oregon dismantled them at home), I don't see Ohio State prevailing here. I'd be surprised if Oregon doesn't post a score in the 40s.

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
January 4, 2010 at 5 p.m. PT
Glendale, Arizona

No. 4 TCU (12-0) vs. No. 6 Boise State (13-0)

Hey, super. We're getting a rematch of the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl, which, while it was an extremely entertaining game last year, it essentially pits two teams against each other that really should be in the same conference. Also, when two teams like this have magical seasons and are still considered "Davids" they should have their day against a "Goliath." David vs. David is just not that compelling, especially on the big stage. Obviously, Cincy is not a "Goliath" per se, but they are from an automatic qualifying conference.

I will definitely watch this game, but I would rather see TCU trounce Florida. It's a shame. But I do like TCU in this game, by less than a TD.

FedEx Orange Bowl
January 5, 2010 at 5 p.m. PT
Miami, Florida

No. 10 Iowa (10-2) vs. No. 9 Georgia Tech (11-2)

I think I'll call this the "Nobody Cares Bowl." Two positives here: the Orange Bowl didn't pick a completely undeserving Penn State team and neither TCU nor Boise State has to face either of these teams.

Iowa played nailbitter-type games all year long and for the most part, Georgia Tech did too. Even though Iowa will have 365 days to prepare for GT's triple-option, I don't think that they'll be truly ready for it when the game starts. This will end badly for the Hawkeyes.
