2009 year of disasters to Andhra Pradesh

Good bye to 2009, we don't want to remember again...

The year 2009 will be remembered for being a year of disasters to Andhra Pradesh. Unexpected death of C.M Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, followed by devastating floods, and has culminated in the intense and often violent agitation for a separate state of Telangana. The death of Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy in a helicopter crash on September 2 not only threw the state into political turmoil, but also created a leadership vacuum in the ruling Congress. Things had not yet been resolved satisfactorily when heavy rains and unprecedented floods threw all life out of gear and precipitated yet another crisis. The long simmering agitation for the separate state of Telangana burst into flames with students taking the lead and politicians following as strikes, dharnas and more violent forms of protest engulfed the state in the past three weeks. Supporters of a United Andhra Pradesh have also taken to the streets and political parties are themselves riven with dissent. As 2009 winds to a close, it can only be hoped that the state is not in for any more dramatic events this year.
