Icet 2009 Admissions, Few takers for MCA and full flow to MBA

Software slowdown hit MCA Colleges very bad...
Only 50% of the seats have been filled in the MCA colleges after many students did not turn up for admission to allotted seats in the counselling. Of the total 16,000 students who were allotted seats in the counselling, only 12,000 students took admissions. Academics fear that several MCA colleges would head for closure this year due to poor response in the wake of slowdown in the IT sector. Total 29,739 seats in over 550 MCA colleges, only 16,210 seats have been filled up in the first phase. The second phase is going on. About 4,000 students who were allotted seats have not taken admissions. Some students are reportedly planning to switch over to MBA from MCA. Students qualified in the Icet have the flexibility to opt for either MBA or MCA as the common entrance test is conducted for both courses. Not even half of the seats out of a total of 60 seats in an MCA class have been filled in the first phase. Some students who were allotted seats too did not turn up for admission despite the due date expiring on August 22. Colleges are worried over that students too might switch over to MBA in the second phase
